Born in Sendai (Japan) in 1996 and raised in Calgary (Canada), Sota Mori is a luthier, artist, and garment maker. Sota apprenticed under Sigmund Johannessen and taught at the Summit School of Guitar Building and Repair on Vancouver Island. At Summit, Sota was introduced to a method developed by Johannessen, Mike Jarvis and Arlen Pelletier, formed from the notions of traditional and modern methods of instrument building and repair, that emphasized integrating art, design and culture. These theories, merged with the contemporary zeitgeist, make up Sota’s interdisciplinary practice today.
Since 2021 Sota has been working at Frank Brothers Guitar Company in Toronto (Canada), where he specializes in setup and assembly, fretwork, electronics and hardware aging on Frank's range of custom guitars. Sota has done repair and maintenance for such acclaimed musicians as David Ryan Harris, Robb Cappalletto, Aaron Marshall, Jake Brownstein, Mike Eckert, Joel Untinen, Luan Phung, Luke Hoskin, Bobby Martin (James Barker Band) and more.
